ELMA RIGGS FILBY

1914 - 2012

Elma Riggs Filby passed away at the age of 98 on August 29, 2012 surrounded by family that loved her dearly. Elma was born on July 13, 1914 in Kingston, Utah, to William and Muriel Snow Riggs. She was the oldest of six children. Growing up during the depression Elma learned at a young age to be mindful and grateful for what she had. She carried these lessons with her during her entire life. Elma married Ralph Filby on May 25, 1945 in Oakland, California during WWII. They were sealed for time and for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 29, 1988. They spent most of their married life Gunnison, Utah moving to Kearns in 1959. They stressed upon their children the need for hard work, honesty and family values and they had a happy and loving home. Elma lived each day to serve The Lord in whatever capacity she could, which included spending over 20 years in the Primary organization, 8 of which were as the Primary President with more than 350 children attending on a regular basis. Elma was the Junior Sunday School Coordinator for over 10 years. She served as a Stake Missionary and as an instructor in the Relief Society. One of her greatest joys was singing in the ward choir which she continued to do until her health no longer permitted it. She loved her scriptures and studied them daily. She prayed often and relied on spirit to guide her life. Elma always had cookies and hugs ready whenever anyone dropped by, and she loved it when they did. In her last few days she would say she was ready to go see everyone who was waiting for her. Although her family is pained that she is gone they are grateful she is having the reunion she was so looking forward to.

Elma was preceded in death by her parents, William Riggs and Muriel Snow Riggs; her sisters, Maureen Westover and Aldyth Quilter; her brother, Reeves Riggs; her daughter, Diedra; grandson, Troy; and her loving husband, Ralph. Elma is survived by her three sons, Lloyd (Susan) Filby, Carl (Lynn) Filby, and Devon (Jennifer) Filby; her sisters, Evelyn (Darrell) Westover and Milda Quilter; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.
