Erik (Rik) Michael Hingley
1970 - 2024
Erik Hingley, 54 passed away on November 29, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on February 11, 1970 in Harbor City California to Thomas Hingley and Clare Shoop. Erik married Robyn on September 14, 2001 in South Lake Tahoe, California. They adopted Kat Baum in July of 1997 and welcomed Amber in 2002, Tiffany in 2003 and Gavin in 2004.
Erik moved from California to Utah in the early 90's. He would attend college while also working full time at Checkers Auto Parts where he met his coworker, now wife, Robyn. While living in Utah he began his life working for Skywest, McDonald Douglas, Boeing, and promoting to Hill Air Force Base operating under the Department of Defense. He had a reputation for loving airplanes and UFO’s. He earned his bachelor’s degree in aircraft engineering and mathematics while also completing his pilot’s license early in his career. His profound interest in operating and maintaining aircraft lasted 20+ years. Erik retired from the Department of Defense in 2021 and settled down at Closure Systems International for 2 years where he enjoyed manufacturing bottle caps for corporate bottled beverage companies.
Erik found his peace in building Legos, coin collecting, firearms, and he surrounded himself with his love for animals. He was very fascinated with paranormal activity including aliens, skin walkers, the investigation of Skin Walker Ranch, The Curse of Oak Island, and anything on the History channel. After moving to Utah in the early 90's, Erik found Utah to be his home. He loved watching college football and his favorite team was the Utah Utes. Growing up in California he never gave up his support for the San Francisco 49ers. He would buy season tickets to the Utah Grizzly’s Hockey Team every year for many years so he and his family could enjoy a sport he was fond of. He loved helping those in need and volunteered his time in the Magna community as much as he could. As a family, Erik never missed the opportunity for a road trip or a vacation. Erik’s spontaneous personality included getting the family up early on weekends and taking a drive wherever the road would end. He loved collecting bones or carcasses on whatever adventure the family was on. Erik was very quick with his tongue and never missed the opportunity to be sarcastic or hilarious.
Everything Erik did he always made sure to include his family. While in school he was on the water polo team which he signed up his kids for swim lessons and would gather the family to take them to the Magna Recreation Pool every day it was open in the summer. He enrolled Amber, Tiffany and Gavin into many sports including soccer, hockey, softball/ baseball, flag football, and volleyball. He always emphasized his biggest accomplishment, was raising his 4 kids.
Erik struggled with ongoing health complications and heart problems from his previous fight with cancer. On Friday, November 15th, Erik went to the Huntsman Center for his second battle with melanoma cancer on his lungs. His functionality of his kidneys were minimal and he needed emergent care. During his admission, doctors found a septic infection on his heart that they immediately began to treat pausing his scheduled immunotherapy. The stress on his heart caused blood clots to form on his central and prefrontal lobe, resulting in several strokes while still under hospital care. He aspirated early Friday morning which caused fluid to enter his lungs. The compounded condition of strokes and his infectious heart succumbed to his passing on November 29th at 8:30am.
Erik held on for his family to have their last Thanksgiving and holiday together. He was surrounded by his family, and has been blessed by all who knew him. Erik leaves behind his beautiful wife, Robyn; 4 kids, Kat (Sarah), Amber (Jaydon), Tiffany (Bryson), and Gavin (Ambree); granddaughter, Avery; grandson, Declan; brother, Kevin Hingley (Nidia); nieces, Gaby (Tucker) and Sarah (JT). He was preceded in death by Tom Hingley (father), Clare Shoop Alvarado (mother) and Dave Alvarado (stepfather) and Lucille “Gog” Shoop (grandmother) and several other family members.
