Gary Hughes

March 9, 1944 — October 10, 2018

Gary Brian Hughes, 74 passed away after years of ongoing health problems at his home on Oct. 10, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Spokane, WA on March 9, 1944 to Jim and Della Hughes.

Gary lettered in track in high school bragging recently that he still had his letter sweater.  He also loved to dance.  If he and his sister did not have a date for the high school sock hops they would go together.  Gary and his wife Sue even won first place in a dance contest while on a cruise.

During his teenage years Gary was meticulous about his hair and was looking forward to getting it all back in the afterlife.  He was also up on the latest fashion fads while still in school.

He attended Ricks College where he served as Vice President of Activities.  He also attended the University of Utah and graduated from BYU in Theatre Arts.  Gary attended SMU while working on his Masters.

Gary was called to the Western States Mission and upon return served a tour of duty in the US Navy in the Mediterranean and Viet Nam teaching English to the Vietnamese officers.  Gary was a faithful member of the church and held many positions during his life.

He married Sue Trayner in Salt Lake City on May 27, 1976 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple.

Gary loved performing and was seen often on the stage at Promised Valley Playhouse.  One of his favorite roles was playing Scrooge in the production of, “A Christmas Carol”.  He loved books, music, and going to the movies each week with his sister Claudia the last few years of his life.

He worked at Utah Engraving Co. for over 30 years and Sky West Airlines before retiring due to his health.

Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sue; his children:  Shealaun (Rhett) Neilson, Rusty (Kristen), Chad (Carlie) and Kara (Jake) Kostial; 17 amazing fun grandchildren who are heartbroken over his passing; sister Claudia Waters, as well as in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.  Preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Payne and nephew Robert Foster.

The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and Elevation Hospice for the wonderful help and caring they have provided over the years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the Hunter Village Ward located at 3450 S. 6400 W.  Viewings will be held Monday 6-8 p.m. at Peel Funeral Home 8525 W. 2700 S., and Tuesday 10-10:45 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Redwood Road at 2 p.m. Tues Oct. 16th. 2018.
