Kathleen Hughes South passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 30, 2023, at her home in West Valley City, UT. She was 78 years old.
Kathleen was born June 12, 1945 in San Diego, CA to Flavian and Elnora Hughes as the fourth of five children in the family. Her father passed away in 1960 when she was 15 years old. She was raised in the Catholic faith attending Mass regularly.
Kathleen moved to Salt Lake City, UT for her Senior Year of High School to live with her older sister, Dolores. She graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in June 1964. She attended Robert Steur College of Beauty to get her Degree in Cosmetology. She attended Excel-cis beauty school to get her Teaching License. She taught beauty school in Oregon and Utah. Later becoming the go-to source for haircuts for friends and family.
She investigated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Saints for three years before deciding to be baptized on May 7, 1967.
Kathleen moved to Logan, UT in 1967 deciding that was a nice town to continue her Cosmetology career. While in Logan, she met her eternal companion, Terrel South. They were sealed in the Logan Utah LDS Temple on May 23, 1974. While in Logan, they were blessed with the birth of two children, Kimberly (1975) and Terrel Jr (1977). They moved to their current home in West Valley City, UT in 1978 where they were blessed with a third child, Michael (1980).
Kathleen volunteered at her children’s schools volunteering in the PTA and their classrooms. In 1993, when her children were a little older, she took on the challenge of being an elementary school lunch lady. It was a job that she enjoyed allowing her to be home with her family when school was out. She later became a lunchroom manager at South Kearns Elementary before retiring in 2009.
Kathleen loved her family and supported them in all their endeavors. She was overjoyed to have five grandsons and one granddaughter. She loved when they visited and enjoyed gathering for family dinners and holidays.
Kathleen was a kindhearted, selfless person who looked for opportunities to help others. She was a source of information whether it was school schedules, church activities, or community events she had the details. She served in her local LDS ward in Relief Society, Primary and on other committees.
Kathleen is survived by her husband Terrel, daughter Kimberly, sons Terrel Jr (Kelly) and Michael (April), six grandchildren, brother Charles (Annette) Hughes and a loving extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents Flavian and Elnora, sisters Dolores and Carol, and a brother Jerry.
A viewing for Kathleen will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023, 6-8pm at Peel Funeral Home (8525 W. Magna Main St.) and continuing Friday, December 8 from 10-10:45 a.m. at Copperhill 4th Ward Church (6710 W. 4145 S.). Funeral services will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Copperhill 4th Ward Church.
Internment at Valley View Memorial Park (4391 W. 4100 S.) immediately after the funeral services.
