Kenneth Romrell was born in Salt Lake City, Utah December 4, 1953, to Rollo and Amelia Newman Romrell. He grew up in Garfield, Utah. His sister, Kay, just a year younger, was his partner in being mischievous. The two of them would seem to always be partners in discovering new things to entertain themselves. One time they decided to get into the flour in the kitchen, which ended up covering them from head to toe. The gas tank of the auto just needed to be filled with dirt. The World Book Encyclopedias made for fun entertainment, ripping out pages and scattering them all over the basement.
Ken attended Webster Elementary for the first three grades and then went to Lake Ridge for grades fourth through sixth. He went to Brockbank Junior High and then Cyprus High School. Ken quit high school when he was a Junior because of being bullied by other students.
From a very early age Ken had difficulties with social acceptance. He had a hard time focusing on things when younger, and later became withdrawn in social situations. This would hamper him for the rest of his life.
Ken was able to obtain some jobs even though he sometimes had difficulties with the social aspect of the jobs. He worked at Dee’s Restaurant for a time and the LDS Hospital as a dish washer.
As time progressed, Ken had periods of schizophrenia and he believed that he was being attacked by demons. He spent several times at different mental institutions trying to deal with his problems. He was finally unable to work and received Social Security in 1980.
Ken, his sisters, Kay and Sherry bought a house together in Magna and would spend time traveling on vacations to Disneyland and Florida. Ken was still having some problems with taking his medicine. He would either forget or refuse to take it, which would cause him to be put in a hospital for treatment. He was finally placed treatment. Ken, Kay and Sherry did many things with their nieces, Peggy, Penny, and Susan. The Hodge girls were just always part of the family.
Even though Ken had many difficulties in his life, he was still able to become an Elder in the LDS Church and receive his endowments. He did have several friends growing up and he enjoyed that friendship. Russell Simmons, Jeff Maddy, and Kelvin Herron.
Ken passed away about 8:30 pm of natural causes at the Lodge at Riverton, November 28, 2022. He is survived by his brothers, David Romrell, Salt Lake, Lee Romrell (Martha) West Jordan, and Ronn Romrell (Janet), South Jordan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents, sister’s Patsy Ann Hodge, Sharon Sue Staufenbeil, and Kay Romrell.
We will all miss you Ken.
