Lawry J. Bowden

July 10, 1934  -  December 25, 2020

A Great Man returned to Heaven on December 25, 2020. Lawry was born on July 10, 1934 to George Clarence and Sarah Ann Rawson Bowden in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in the town of Garfield, Utah. Graduated from Cyprus High School in 1953. Married his high school sweetheart Mary Ellen Hill on January 15, 1954 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 8, 1958. Mary Ellen passed away in April of 1988.

Lawry then married Lucinda Martin on October 24, 1989 in the Salt Lake Temple. Lawry worked as a chemist at Kennecott Copper Corporation for 33 years until he retired in 1986. While working at Kennecott he served as a Union President for his local chapter of the United Steelworkers. A highlight from his many years of union work was meeting with President Johnson in Washington D.C. to negotiate a contract that ended a 9-month strike. Lawry was highly active in the Democratic Party, he worked and volunteered on many local, state and national campaigns. He served as a State Delegate many times and was also a Delegate for the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, IL. Lawry also served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, was in the Bishopric of Center Ward and served as a Councilman in the Riverside Stake.

He then worked for Varian Medical Systems for 4 years until he decided he would much rather play golf than work. He moved to Hurricane, Utah with Lucinda in 1999 and became an avid photographer, he made the statement you can never take too many photos of Southern Utah Scenery. He loved traveling the back roads and ATV trails of Southern Utah with his camera handy. He belonged to the CMA Motorcycle Club in his younger days and the Tri-State ATV Club when he moved to Hurricane. He loved to socialize with anyone and everyone because he probably knew them or pretended to if he did not. He had a wicked sense of humor and loved to tease those around him. He was well liked by all who knew him and was a kind and generous man, a pure gentleman.

Lawry is survived by his wife Lucinda, his children, Chris – Carol Bowden, NancyEllen – Tim Regier, Jim – Bobette Bowden.  Stepchildren,  Shellee – Doug Guernsey, Shar Fulton, Teresa Louderback, Carrie Bryce. 8 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren.
