Leatha Lovell Gillett Garfield

Leatha Lovell Gillett Garfield passed peacefully on, Sunday, December 1, 2024, in Tooele, Utah. She was born on Monday, January 14, 1935, to Alda Peterson Lovell and William Clisbee Lovell in Garfield, Utah. Leatha was a devoted daughter, sister, sister-in- law, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law, and mother of five plus two foster children. She had nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Our mom was an exceptionally talented seamstress. She could make anything with or without a pattern. In addition, she made lovely quilts and blankets. Her trademark was giving her crocheted hand towels as gifts and making them for every occasion. She enjoyed her horses and was an active long-time member of Magna Mount Riders where she travelled throughout Utah while competing in barrel and pole racing. She created many fun memories at horse shows and camping trips with her family.

After Leatha’s retirement from E-Systems, she travelled abroad and took many cruises. Her time was spent at her summer home in Star Valley, Wyoming, at her property in Oak City, her Pine Canyon house, and her condo in St. George, Utah. Her home base residency was Magna, Utah where she graduated from Cyprus High School. She was married at age 18 to Ronnie Sherman Gillett. They had five children together before getting divorced. After her last child was out of the house, she married Gaylen Garfield who was also a Cyprus High alumnus.

Leatha is survived by her sisters, Jeanine Allred and Vauna Peterson; her brother, Brent (Lois) Lovell; her children, Zane (Jeanine) Gillett, Karen (Ronald) Parsons, Alda Mills; her foster son, Kevin James Frost; grandchildren, Jason (Wendy), Melissa (Aaron), Jared, Drew, Jake (Katie), Kelly, Corey, Nathan, and Brookes; her great-grandchildren, Jaxn, Marley, Charlee, and Lander.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both spouses, sister, Darlene Timothy (Aunt Dar); foster son, Jack Frost; her son, Russell James Gillett; and her daughter, Kristine Villiard.

Leatha was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had the gift of giving heartfelt talks with an unwavering testimony. On the morning of her last day earth-side, she was symbolically given the sacrament and then a blessing of transition by the elders of her ward. We honor her legacy of being able to listen carefully to others and without judgment.

We wish to thank every CNA, Med Tech, the entire staff, and nursing director at Cottage Glen Assisted Living, Tooele, Utah. We appreciate your compassionate care of our mom. We also give thanks to our mother’s entire hospice care team at Active Home Health, Hospice, and Personal Care, Sandy, Utah. All of you gave great service.
