MAGNA-Lewis Florian Welcker Jr., 86, passed away peacefully Monday December 19 th at Emeritus Memory Care Neighborhood. Lewis was the oldest son of Louis and Rowena Welcker born Feburary 17, 1925 in Magna, Utah. Lew grew up in Magna and graduated from Cyprus High School where he was active in both athletic and student government activities.
Lew enlisted in the United States Marine Corp after high school graduation in 1943 and saw action during World War II at Guam and Iwo Jima. Lew remained proud to be a Marine throughout his life, wearing his USMC baseball cap until his passing.
Lew returned to Magna after WWII and then entered Idaho State University to study Pharmacy. Lewis graduated from ISU in 1951 and practiced pharmacy in Magna at Dyches Pharmacy and M&M Prescriptions until 1994 when he retired.
Lewis married Lois Thurman August 27, 1948 and they were blessed with 3 children Karen Welcker Simper, Kristine Welcker Ciupek and Michael Scott Welcker.
Lewis loved music and he loved to sing. He sang in quartets in high school and college and joined the Beehive Statesman Barbershop Chorus singing with them for 20 years.
Lewis will be remembered for his service to his family, neighbors and friends.
Lewis has returned home for Christmas to be with his wife, son, parents, brother, and sister who preceded him in death.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Karen Simper (Brent) and Kristine Ciupek (Andy); his sister, Susan Backman; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Rhea Thurman; 7 grandsons and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Peel Funeral Home, 8525 W. 2700 S., where friends and family may call both Tuesday 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday 10-10:45 a.m. Interment: Valley View Memorial Park. Online condolences: www.peelfuneralhome.com
