With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ponde Leargon Leafty, lovingly known as "Conde" and affectionately called “The Wizard.” A beloved husband, father, son, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ponde peacefully departed this earthly realm in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 27, 2024, at 75. (905 months and 6 days old).
Born on June 21, 1949, in Fall City, Nebraska, Ponde was the cherished son of Kathleen May Cross and Leland Rey Leafty. He has 5 siblings.
Ponde shared his life with his late ex-wife, Elvira Venezuela Guzman, with whom he had two children: Maria Ester Leafty and Abelardo Tito Leafty. He was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Maria Elvira Gastelum Leafty and Perla Magdalena Gastelum. His legacy continues through his two great-grandchildren.
Ponde dedicated 18 years (216 months) of his life as a groundskeeper at the city cemetery. Following his retirement, he found joy and purpose in volunteering with the Salvation Army. Known for his kind heart and willingness to help others, Ponde’s wise words and advice were a source of comfort to many.
True to his nickname “The Wizard,” Ponde embraced life with a unique flair. He delighted in dressing in robes and turbans, blowing horns, and dancing in circles to captivate those around him. His love for numbers—especially the number nine—was legendary among those who knew him. Ponde’s vibrant spirit and ability to bring smiles to everyone he encountered made him unforgettable.
Ponde Leargon Leafty was truly one of a kind—a spiritual soul whose presence lit up every room.
A poem written by his late granddaughter, Maria Elvira Gastelum Leafty beautifully captures his essence:
“In purple robes, like a king he stood,
Grandpo, always doing good.
Nine was his number, a guiding light,
Nine coordinates, always in sight.
A zebra's stripes, wild and free,
Symbolized the spirit he wished to be.
Unique and untamed, just like his soul,
Helping others was his ultimate goal.
Ringing the bell, with a joyous sound,
Spreading kindness all around.
Nine hundred months, he lived so bright,
Celebrating each one with pure delight.
"Righteously righteous," he'd always say,
Living life in his own special way.
Grandpo, forever in our hearts,
His legacy of love never departs.”
Ponde was laid to rest on December 16, 2024. May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who were touched by his remarkable life.
