Sherman N. Drain
1926 - 2011
Sherman N. Drain was the eldest of eleven children born February 18, 1926 to Sherman E. and Ruby A. Drain in Section, Alabama. He passed away March 5, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona due to complications of flu and pneumonia.
He served in the Army Air Forces and was honorably discharged in 1946. While stationed at Camp Kearns he met his beloved wife, Afton Turpin at the roller skating rink in downtown Salt Lake. He serenaded her with his guitar and his best Hank Williams impression while she was working at Kress's. They married on May 19, 1946. Sherm and Afton were the proud parents of Robert Drain, Sherie Thorn and Diane Drain.
From his early childhood growing up in rural Alabama, Sherm taught himself to play the guitar, fiddle and mandolin and developed a deep love for bluegrass music. He shared that love with his family by holding jam sessions with his siblings.
Sherm retired from Kennecott after 35 years of dedicated service. Sherm also drove long-haul truck during and after his time with Kennecott. He was an avid and talented farmer and always had a beautiful and enviable vegetable garden. He loved to share the fruits of his labor with family and neighbors. When Sherm wasn't in his garden he could be found fishing and hunting around the state of Utah. He was incredibly handy and could repair anything from lawn mowers to automobiles. In his later years, Sherm enjoyed spending time with his brother, Johnny in Boulder, Utah and especially loved playing poker.
Sherm will be missed by his family and friends and we are grateful for the kindness and generosity he demonstrated in his life.
Sherm is survived by his two daughters, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, four brothers, and one sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Afton; son, Robert; three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday, March 14, 2011 at Peel Funeral Home, 8525 W. 2700 S., Magna, where friends and family may call both Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday 11-11:45 a.m. Interment: Valley View Memorial Park. Online condolences: www.peelfuneralhome.com
